Crafting Amanita Fly Agaric Tea: A Step-by-Step Guide to Preparation



Regarding Amanita preparation, as with all species, mushrooms should be cooked before consumption to avoid bouts of possible nausea and more bioavailability of medicinal or nutrient compounds. Mushroom cell walls are more difficult to digest than plant matter. Dried Amanita still contains mostly the precursor, ibotenic acid, to the desired compound, muscimol. Ibotenic acid is 1/5-1/10 as psychoactive as muscimol and has different pharmacological effects. Many people do consume a gram of dried mushroom without stomach struggles. Ibotenic acid can also cause some nausea. To decarboxylate the remaining ibotenic acid to muscimol is not complicated. Remember, muscimol is also unstable, but more stable than ibotenic acid. Muscimol is reactive to oxygen, and also to water. It slowly hydrolyzes in water, degrading.


 

Tea can be made which can be consumed or processed further. To make tea, bring distilled or non-chlorinated water to a soft boil and boil for a few min to remove dissolved oxygen. Then turn down the heat so it is not boiling and add ground Amanita powder. Don’t grind your amanita until ready to use it. The powder is less stable than whole mushrooms. Always store your powder or whole mushrooms in a sealed bag in the freezer.


So, after adding the powder, stir gently, for 10 min. Then rapidly cool it in a cold water or ice bath. Then filter it by pouring through a clean shirt and squeezing it to get most of the water out. A small fruit press with 75 micron filter bag works very well for this action.



This can be drunk. However, for best results, the next step will decarboxylate most or all of the ibotenic acid to muscimol. Acidify the filtrate with citric acid. About 1/4-1/3 tsp per half pint of water. The goal is pH 2.7-3.5.



At this pH, decarboxylation is most efficient in this process. After acidification, simmer without boiling the filtrate for 1 hour -1.5 hours. Keep it covered to minimize loss of water via steam and small amounts of the muscimol 2-3% in the steam droplets via entrainment. This also helps create a low oxygen environment. For better muscimol yield, pressure cook the acidified filtrate 15-20 min at 250F. Inside the pressure cooker is a low oxygen environment and the filtrate is very low dissolved oxygen. Minimum boiling popping bubbles that act like an eggbeater mixing the liquid with oxygen in the atmosphere. When pressure cook or simmer is finished, rapidly cool the tea and consume on a empty stomach an hour before bedtime. The amount of tea that = about 1 gr of mushroom will often bring calm. Larger amounts up to 4-5 gr will bring some feelings of intoxication similar to a beer in intensity but the feeling. 10-15 gr will often result in very vivid dreams, often of time moving backwards or battling threads of time before the threads reach infinity where a big boom can happen. These dreams are remembered if the dreamer awakens with-in the dream. The dreams can feel very real.



I have no experience using amanita during daylight hours. Large doses put me to sleep and to the dream world. Small 1-2 gr doses in the day hours outside or around people can be more of a calm experience with less anxiety. I wouldn’t consume 10 gr at the Walmart store. 10-15 gr at night on the bed will result in everything on the bed ending up on the floor. The dreamer may be very active on the bed. One time I awakened with my head on the bottom shelf and my feet on the bed. Twenty-five gr can produce a state where you won’t be able to speak English or be aware of your actions. Or even recognize your wife.


 

I don’t recommend boiling down amanita extract to concentrate. Muscimol degrades during this process. Muscarine, a toxin, is present in small amounts in amanita. Muscarine is thermally stable and will increase in concentration during a boiling down process, while the muscimol is degrading. So, never by concentrates or powders. Nor any gummy products, or candy bars. Whole dried amanita is best. We store our amanita vacuum packed at 0F. At this temperature, slow solid state very efficient decarboxylation continues. In ten months in one study, Ibotenic acid decreased by 50%, muscimol increased by 14X.

This is better than using heat to decarboxylate ibotenic acid in a tea. Don’t expose dry amanita to high dry heat temps. Dry amanita exposed to 220F dry oven heat will degrade all actives in 10 min, except muscarine.
